A 4-hour extended edition of "Secrets of Spanish Florida – A Secrets of the Dead Special" on early Florida settlements, where leading archaeologists and historians unearth the multicultural origins of first permanent European settlement founded there in 1565.
The first permanent European settlement in the United States was founded two generations before the Pilgrims arrived, not by English Protestants. Soon after Columbus landed in the Caribbean in 1492. Ponce de Leon in 1513 led the first of three early explorations of Florida by Spain, followed by Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528 and Hernando de Soto in 1539 to 1540. Settlement came later: Ponce de Leon made the first attempt in 1521 near Charlotte Harbor. In 1565, Spain established a stronghold when Pedro Menendez de Aviles founded St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied European-origin settlement in the continental United States. The city was established 42 years before Jamestown and 55 years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock.
At its peak, Spanish Florida extended west to Mexico and north to the Carolinas. Between 1526 and 1704, Spain established at least 146 missions, mission centers, and native villages – 128 in what is now the state of Florida and 18 on the Georgia coast. But Spain lost the Carolinas and Georgia colonies to the English in 1633 and 1670 and the Louisiana colony to the French in 1682.
For more than 70 years, historians and archaeologists have studied missions, associated small forts and the fortified Spanish settlement of St. Augustine. America's Untold Story, from Secrets of the Dead, uncovers the story of America's past that never made it into textbooks.

Episode One - Struggle to Survive
Through archives and diaries discovered in a private collection held by an ancestor of Pedro Menendez, this episode follows the survivors through their first year unveiling a very different America than we know today.

Episode Two - Men of God, Men of Greed
By 1607 when Jamestown was founded, St. Augustine was undergoing urban renewal, but English colonists were ready to attack. In 1620 Plymouth was founded, and by 1664, 11 of the 13 British colonies had been established.

Episode Three - The British Are Coming
In 1763 Spain ceded Florida to England in order to keep its valuable port of Havana. The entire city of St. Augustine fled to Cuba and Mexico to avoid British rule. As the Spanish move out, the British move in - and with them, slavery.

Episode Four - The 14th and 15th Colonies
The British divided Florida into two parts, the East and West, becoming the 14th and 15th British colonies. In 1812 the Patriot's War began, and Florida became U.S. territory.
