A brutal dictator orders 80,000 people to leave the country within 90 days or face the consequences. Many have British passports. As the deadline looms, will Britain help?
Part 1: The Boxer and the Butterfly
In 1972, Ugandan dictator Idi Amin announced a plan to throw all Asians out of the east African country within 90 days in a bid to increase support for his regime. Priyanga Burford narrates this documentary charting the impact of the decree on the 80,000 people affected as they hoped to be able to flee on their British passports.
Part 2: Sitting on the Fire
In September 1972, one month after Idi Amin announces his plan to expel all Ugandan Asians from the country, 80,000 people are making plans to flee, in fear for their lives. In the UK, controversial politician Enoch Powell rallies those who say the Ugandan Asians have no right to come, and some councils try to steer new arrivals away from their cities. Amin refuses to negotiate, stepping up the pressure on those stuck in the country.
